Lack of public speaking experience, hard to put into perspective anxiety that precedes new experiences Different feeling- even the most seasoned speakers feel anxiety! Center of attention is uncomfortable! Onset of Anxiety and how to overcome it Some people get anxious as soon as they know that are going to have a speech. (Pre-preparation anxiety) don't allow anxiety to deter speech planning! Delaying planning for the speech or missing vital information needed to fulfill the speech assignment. Anxiety occurs as speech preparation is going on (preparation anxiety) Careful of avoidance and procrastination! gain sense of control and confidence by immersing in speech preparation. Anxiety stop-time- allow anxiety to present itself and declare time for confidence to step in so you can proceed to complete your practice. Some people feel anxious when rehearsing (pre-performance anxiety) Practice your speech to build confidence! This anxiety is most pronounced during the introduction of the speech, which is when we are most aware of the audience's attention. We precieve hostile/negative audience causes us to feel more anxious. Many people experience public speaking anxiety while they deliver the speech. (performance anxiety) practice stress-control breathing as well as other relaxation techniques. We each experience more and les speech anxiety depending on our level of trait anxiety. High trait anxiety are naturally anxious most of the time, whereas people with low trait experience nervousness only in unusual situations. Strategies for building confidence Plan presentation thoroughly Rehearse often until you know how to express yourself Lower anxiety by using positive thoughts prior to delivery Use Visualization and relaxation techniques for controlling anxiety Visualizing a positive outcome! Meditation, stress-control breathing, and also natural gesture Fight or flight response- our body's automatic response to threatening/fear inducing events. These sensation indicates that the body is preparing to fight a threat headon or make a escape from the threat. Some of us tends to be more anxiety beause of our particular psychological traits, life experiences, and genetic factor. Public speaking anxiety- a situation-specific social anxiety that rises from the real or anticipatd enactment of an oral presentation. If there was no exposure to public speaking/ have unpleasant experiences, having anxiety is natural. Feeling different could be us being extra sensitive about our bad haircut, list, or accent. We also may assume that others would not be interested in anything we say. Everyone experiences nervousness about giving a speech. Worring about what we are doing wrong while giving a speech really distracts us from the speech itself and puts focus on the "me". We don't want to feel more conspicuous that increases our anxiety.
